Hi, I’m Kate!
I have been working in tech since 2016.
Before starting my career as a technical writer, I was a contract technical editor at Analog Devices, Inc., a semiconductor company based in Massachusetts, for a year and a half. My short career as a technical editor prepared me well for my career as a technical writer.
I worked for two years at Mobile Heartbeat, a software company based in Massachusetts, specializing in an app for all staff members in a hospital to communicate with one another throughout the day. I worked on all internal and external documentation, including video production and the creation and implementation of a customer portal.
In January 2020, I received a promotion to Technical Writer II and began a new job at 21st Century Software, a company that ensures mainframe data protection through its various product lines. I was hired to work with the tech doc manager and in conjunction with the tech docs team based in Australia. My company underwent a reorg and my boss was laid off in early April. I remained on as the lone writer managing documentation for 3 product lines (2 established, 1 new).
In January 2021, I started at Hewlett Packard Enterprise as an Information Developer III (intermediate level). After about 8 months, I was promoted to Information Developer IV (expert level).
In addition to working full-time as a technical writer, I was a college-level writing tutor for 7 years before I “retired” from tutoring in a school setting in May 2022. I began my career as a tutor at Fitchburg State University in August 2015 while I was in my senior year of undergrad. I received the Tutor Center Excellence Award for tutoring 18 students for a total of 350 hours during the fall and spring semesters before my graduation.
I continued to tutor after graduation with two of the students I met while I tutored at FSU. We stopped tutoring in May 2019 as they graduated from FSU! I am so incredibly proud of them. We had regular FaceTime and Google Document sessions to work through their papers for 3 years. They are success stories all on their own and they are one of the reasons why I continue to tutor.
I enjoyed tutoring because I loved seeing the “lightbulb moment.” My favorite part of all tutoring sessions was when a student sat down with me and they have *that* moment, the “Ah ha! Kate! I get it now” moment. I lived for those moments. There is no greater feeling in the world than that.
I worked part-time at a Bunker Hill Community College from September 2017 through May 2022 where I met people from all over the world with various levels of English skills. Each of my students taught me something new every single day. I still firmly believe that as a tutor, you don’t just teach your students, they teach you.
I think what set me apart as a writing tutor is my personality. I am not afraid to tell you what you need to work on, and I am also not afraid to tell you that sometimes I mess up, too. If I see you are in need and it is distracting you from our session, I am more than willing to let you talk it out. I don’t necessarily believe in “all work, no play” because I think you will be most successful when you are able to be who they truly are at all times.
I have been an avid reader all my life. During the summer while I was growing up, I used to beg my mom to take me to our library four times a week so I could check out all different genres of books. My mom would always take me with no hesitation, give me a large bag to collect my “treasures,” and never made me put any books back–even when I had upwards of 20 books, each over 150 pages, in my bag. I always finished the books within a few days.
I have always enjoyed writing, and I believe that one of the most valuable skills you can have is being able to write well. I believe you should always take pride in what you have written.
As a former technical editor and current technical writer and (semi-retired) tutor, good grammar and editing are very important to me. I became invested in trying to teach each student I work with how important the tools of good grammar and the ability to write are. I want to see each student I come into contact with succeed.
I do my best to make reading, writing, English, grammar, and vocabulary fun. I am personable and I enjoy laughing.
